Shiloh Baptist Church Historically Connected

Shiloh Baptist Church was organized in 1889 and is the fourth oldest black church in Hartford. The first meeting was held at the home of Sister Lucy Roy on Albany Avenue. Since they had no permanent church at that time, they met in various halls on Albany Avenue, Asylum Avenue, and Church Street. Construction started on their current building at 350 Albany Avenue in 1911. One of their first pastors, Pastor Moody, was a great social activist who helped lead the way in getting African Americans hired by the city of Hartford, was himself one of the first African Americans to serve on Hartford’s school board, and under his leadership Shiloh opened its first soup kitchen during the great depression that served all races. This legacy was continued by Rev. King T. Hayes who served as pastor from 1975-2006.

Since February 16, 2007, Pastor Charles Turner has led Shiloh Baptist Church. Under his leadership, this historic church has been re-energized for this generation; this has been shown both through increased attendance and more importantly in deepened discipleship. The vision Shiloh desires to live out is, “Shiloh Baptist Church meets you where you are and walks with you on your journey; encouraging and equipping you so that you can give and experience love unconditionally, life more abundantly and reaching your destiny which is the place you want to be... A Place of Peace.”
